History
Established in 1948 and headquartered in Northeast Minneapolis, AccessAbility was founded by parents of children with cerebral palsy as the Cerebral Palsy Foundation. It has evolved considerably in its 55 year history.
1948
Agency was established as the Cerebral Palsy Foundation by parents of children with cerebral palsy to provide social, educational, and therapeutic services.
1954
As children with disabilities were absorbed into the school system, vocational services for adults with disabilities were established.
1959
Frank Malvon Groves, owner of S.J. Groves Construction Company, donated the current facility located at Hoover St. NE.
1961
United Way recognized our valuable service to the community and begun funding the organization.
1970
With a coupon sorting contract from General Mills, work opportunities for individuals with disabilities sharply increased.
1981
The Community Employment Services Program was established to provide individuals with disabilities access to employment options in businesses in the community.
1986
The name was change to AccessAbility, Inc. reflecting the provision of services and the expanded population served.
1995
Established the Accessing Community Experiences (ACE) program to meet the needs of adults with developmental disabilities that may not be seeking a vocational program but are ready for more retirement activities.
1998
Extended our successful rehabilitation model to serve economically disadvantaged adults with barriers to employment receiving benefits from the Minnesota Family Investment Program (MFIP)
2000
The Friends Together program was developed as a recreational community inclusion option for individuals with developmental disabilities who are not interested in working, only in leisure activities.
2002Training and work programs that incorporated more
technology related positions were implemented. TechReach and Project Connect in the Welfare to Work area and TechAbility in the Day Training and Habilitation area were begun. There was also a marked increase in higher skill level training and employment opportunities available in the on-site production area. |
