Community Employment
AccessAbility's Community Employment (CE) component provides businesses with qualified workers on-site within a variety of employment settings in the Twin Cities metro area. Based on program participants' skills and interests, appropriate employment is obtained within local businesses. Individuals may be hired directly by an employer and can choose to receive ongoing support and follow-up services through an AccessAbility case manager. Another option for participants is to become a member of a work team. AccessAbility provides an on-site supervisor who is responsible for continuous training and support services to ensure the team is successful and employers' needs are met. Each of these services provide direct and highly individualized assistance in learning the necessary skills and job responsibilities required when working in the community.
While AccessAbility has obtained many local government and commercial contracts on its own, it also works in partnership with NISH. NISH is a national organization that supports individuals with disabilities in obtaining employment within the federal government, AccessAbility has four federal contracts in janitorial services under the Javits-Wagner-O-Day (JWOD) program. JWOD promotes employment of individuals with disabilities through the government's purchasing power. AccessAbility is also working to secure federal contracts in document processing and document destruction services. In 2003, individuals working at JWOD contract sites were able to earn wages ranging from $9.67 to $13.78 per hour.
